Admission Tips
Every Spring after college admissions decisions are rendered, I get a few calls from parents of children not accepted into their dream school. More often than not, the child was a good student, had high standardized test scores amongst the peers at THEIR school; and had good grades, but often not in their school's toughest classes. They are dismayed and disheartened that they did not get accepted into their choice college and are baffled as to why not. The problem is they weren't comparing themselves to the thousands of other students applying to that same school. You never want to dart or dash a child's dreams, but tell them what they REALLY need to do to reach them. Most schools post a "profile" of their most recently accepted class. Use it to see how your child is stacking up. When you look at those, it becomes clear why a B+ average student with a 900 SAT score may not be enough to get into a highly selective public university like U-M (#GoBlue, https://admissions.umich.edu/apply/freshmen-applicants/student-profile), or an Ivy League School like Penn (http://www.admissions.upenn.edu/apply/whatpennlooksfor/incoming-class-profile). Test scores not quite in the range? There is still time to re-study and retake the SAT & ACT. Keep raising your grades and take your school's hardest classes. You can do this; you just need to know what it is you're doing! #GoGetIt

Black Entrepreneurs and Black Small Business Owners: How To Use Google to Your Advantage

Accelerate With Google
Google Accounts to access Gmail, AdWords, Analytics and more from any device.
Google Trends to see what the world is searching for, comparing volume patterns across specific regions, categories and time frames.
Google Alerts to monitor the web for interesting new content.
Find out if your business appears on Google Search and Maps - and tweak the listing at www.gybo.com/business.
You can work the Google search engine "organically" and for free by packing your site with engaging content, regular updates, important keywords (repeated in sentences, not just to "game" the system) and with smart promotion (from social media to website URLs on packing bags and sales slips). That all drives eyeballs to a site and generates happy reviews that the Google engine then calculates into its popularity ranking and placement. Also free are research tools like Google Analytics, which track how many visitors came to a website, and what they did when they got there. There you can also create a custom site from scratch with free help and a year's complimentary service and domain name ownership from StartLogic. There have been concerns that Google would introduce a pay version of Analytics but so far they've allowed it to remain Free.
